What is the origin of Judo? Modern judo has its origins in jujitsu, a fighting art that can be traced back over a thousand years into Japanese history. Judo itself, however, is a relatively recent synthesis and owes it existence to the genius of one man: Dr. Jigoro Kano. HISTORY OF JUDO Judo, literally "the gentle way," is an ancient martial art which makes use of the opponent's strength to overcome him, thus overcoming by skill rather than sheer strength. Judo developed from the principles of jujitsu, a weaponless system of self-defense. which was developed by Buddhist monks over a period of 2,000 years. Jigoro Kano, a Japanese jujitsu expert, created judo in 1882. By dropping some of the more dangerous moves, he created a sport which depends for success upon the skill of using an opponent's own weight and strength against him. Initially, Judo was separated into two distinct practices, one for self-defense and one for physical conditioning. These days, Judo is practiced mainly as a sport, which has competitions and tournaments worldwide. The main techniques of this art are throwing and grappling. Judo fighters spend much of their training in learning how to fall safely when they are thrown, to minimize their risk of injury.
